The Washington Commanders have emerged as an early contender for the star edge rusher. Bleacher Report’s NFL Insider, James Palmer, analyzes how a potential trade could take shape.
The general expectation is that acquiring Garrett would require at least one first-round draft pick, along with additional assets such as multiple lower-round picks or a player to complete the deal.
“Keep in mind, they have fewer players under contract for 2025 than any other team in the league,” Palmer explains in the video. “Adam Peters also has a significant budget to work with, as the team currently holds $78 million in cap space—the third-largest in the NFL.”
Palmer further explains that Washington’s primary focus is protecting Jayden Daniels, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of pursuing Garrett.
“They have plenty of resources, but is this the kind of franchise-altering move that Washington can pull off? Some around the league believe it is,” he adds.
The Commanders have significant capital to utilize in 2025, but they don’t require major roster overhauls. After a strong 2024 season, their focus is on refining key positions to strengthen the team. Garrett could be a crucial addition, and Dan Quinn may be the ideal coach to manage his dynamic personality.
Currently, the Browns have little interest in trading Garrett for several reasons. However, given his influence, if he doesn’t get what he wants, it’s bound to become a widely discussed issue. The situation could turn into a prolonged and dramatic saga, making it unlikely that Garrett will play for Cleveland in 2025. Whether he ends up with the Commanders remains uncertain, but he would undoubtedly be a valuable addition to their run defense, which needs significant improvement this offseason.
