Lahore, 25 April 2025: Quetta Gladiators secured their second victory of HBL PSL X with a narrow five-run win over Karachi Kings in their first home fixture at Gaddafi Stadium on Friday night.
Led by Saud Shakeel, Quetta defended a modest total of 142 with a strong bowling display, highlighted by the pace trio of Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Mohammad Amir, and Khurram Shahzad, who collectively claimed six wickets for just 79 runs across 12 overs.
Player of the Match Abrar Ahmed delivered an economical spell, conceding only 15 runs in his four overs and removing the key batter Khushdil Shah for a duck in just four balls.
Karachi’s chase got off to a shaky start as Amir dismissed David Warner for four runs off as many balls. Tim Seifert (48 off 27 balls, including five fours and two sixes) and James Vince (29 off 28 balls, three fours and one six) steadied the innings with a 73-run partnership, before Saud broke the stand by dismissing Vince in the ninth over.
Three overs later, Mohammad Wasim Jnr dismissed Tim Seifert, triggering a collapse that saw Karachi Kings crumble from 77-2 in 8.4 overs to 115-8 by the end of the 17th over. Despite a late cameo by Hasan Ali—who hit three boundaries and a six in an unbeaten 24 off just 13 balls—Karachi fell short, finishing at 137-8 in their 20 overs.
Earlier in the match, Quetta Gladiators had a shaky start after being put in to bat, losing three wickets for only 20 runs in 3.3 overs. Hasan Ali struck twice in his opening over, removing Saud Shakeel and Finn Allen within four deliveries, and then bowled Rilee Rossouw in the fourth over.
Kusal Mendis (36 off 22 balls, five fours) and debutant Mark Chapman attempted to revive the innings with a quick 24-run partnership from 14 balls, but Chapman was bowled by Mohammad Nabi, and Mendis was dismissed by Mohammad Abbas Afridi.
At 69-5, Faheem Ashraf and Hasan Nawaz began to rebuild in the ninth over. The pair added 59 runs for the sixth wicket, lifting Quetta to 128-6. Faheem was the top scorer with a fiery 43 off 27 balls, including four fours and three sixes, while Hasan contributed 35 off 34 with two boundaries.
Their stand was ended by young Fawad Ali, and the Gladiators then lost their last four wickets for just 14 runs, getting bowled out for 142 in 19.3 overs.
Hasan Ali was the standout bowler for Karachi Kings with figures of 3.3-0-33-3, while Mir Hamza and Mohammad Abbas Afridi picked up two wickets each.
