Game of Thrones’ David Benioff & DB Weiss Sign Netflix Exclusive Deal

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have signed an overall deal with Netflix. The exclusive deal will see the duo write, produce and direct series and films for the streaming service.

According to Deadline, Benioff and Weiss signed a nine-figure deal, which is similar to the deals Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy secured with Netflix. The creators were in talks with six different companies (HBO/WarnerMedia, Netflix, Disney, Apple, Comcast and Amazon), but ultimately settled on Netflix, which brings their tenure at HBO to an end.

“We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said. “They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members.”

“We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “Over the past few months we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber. We remember the same shots from the same ‘80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them.”

Benioff and Weiss will fulfill their previous obligations, which include a new Star Wars trilogy for Disney, a Kurt Cobain project for Universal, and Dirty White Boys for Fox/Disney.

Game of Thrones came to an end earlier this year, with the fan-favorite series concluding with a six-episode Season 8.
